Why does everyone think that Frankenstein is the name of the creature from Mary Shelley's

Question: Do you make this common mistake?

Answer: The REASON the mistake is made is twofold: The NAME of the novel is Frankenstein and the monster seems to dominate the storytelling, not its inventor. The monster is often referred to, in discussions, as "the Frankenstein monster" and young students easily jump to the conclusion that this is a redundant way of saying "the Monster", whose name is Frankenstein, like saying "the young Thomas Edison", who is young. When I was young, I thought the monster's name was Frankenstein, but I never embarrassed myself by saying it out loud.
